Avoid Scams with Self Help Credit Repair

According to the FCC, when it comes to credit repair, self help may be the best.  There are many scams that claim that they will wipe out your credit problems, take your money, and then accomplish nothing.

Warning Signs of a Credit Repair Scam

The FCC lists the following warning signs so that you know that a company claiming to be a credit repair agency may be a scam:

  • The alleged credit repair company does not tell you your legal rights and what you can do for yourself for free.
  • The alleged credit repair service recommends that you not contact a credit reporting company directly.
  • The alleged credit repair agency suggests that you try to invent a “new” credit identity — and then, a new credit report — by applying for an Employer Identification Number to use instead of your Social Security number.

  • The alleged credit repair company advises you to dispute all information in your credit report or take any action that seems illegal, like creating a new credit identity. If you follow illegal advice and commit fraud, you may be subject to prosecution.
